Literature has been part of my life for as long as I can remember,  getting lost in the worlds of books and writing has always brought me joy and solace. I was fortunate at a young age to study English Literature which exposed me to the works of great writers. Aside from a couple of plays I had written and helped develop from page to stage while studying Theatre at University,  other writing had largely taken a backseat during my degree until my final year when I started writing poetry to help me processes my thoughts. I continued writing poetry while I was furthering my career in Producing and decided to share my poems publicly online in 2014. I started attending spoken word open mic nights and performed my first gig at The Birdcage, Norwich in 2016.

Soon after my first gig, I connected with a Suffolk based poetry producer who gave me a platform at their open mic nights and booking me for festivals.

Since then, my work has been performed on many festival stages, radio and at literary events. I was commissioned by my local BBC Radio station in May 2020 to write a poem for their Make A Difference campaign. My articles have featured in Theatre Bubble, Sad Girls Club and DIVA Magazine. After my poetry was published in 2 anthologies by United Press,  I published my first collection of poetry in 2017 called  ‘Love & Loss: Collected Poems' and currently working on my second book of collected poems called 'Warrior Woman'.

testimonals

Hazel came to the rescue with brilliantly witty poetry about Brexit, homesickness and death. “Misplaced” joined the Brexit-literature canon with biting lines such as “the story is bigger than you” and “Give up control / It was never ours to take back”. Her second poem, “My Country Yene Hagere” was affectionate, with heavy nostalgia embedded in the repetition of “My country, yene hagere, is miles away from me.” The final poem in her set, “Contagious Life” was warmly funny, and dealt with cultural fear of death in a genuine and solid way
